4-H Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Club
The Prairie Ecology Busand Jackson County Extension have teamed up to bring a new 4-H Club opportunity for youth in grades 4-8. The Club meet once a month from October thru March for super-sleuthing, exciting experiments, and hands-on activities. They will learn how experts solve mysteries with staff from the PEBC, Extension Office, Chief of Police and more! The first class of 2012 was held at Sparks Park on January 24 entitled Animal Tracking. Tracks, burrows, scat and scent marks all tell a story about the animals that live there and winter is an excellent time to go out and learn what wild animals are our neighbors. The students became detectives and honed up on observation and problem-solving skills as they trekked Sparks Park trails! Hair Analysis was the topic of the February 28 CSI class at the JCC Middle School in Lakefield, taught by Paul Berg, Science Teacher from Southwest Star Central Schools. He talked about the parts of a hair particle. The group made casts of a hair, using liquid latex, which showed the scales/outer side. They used microscopes and slides to view the inside of the hair. The final 4-H Crime Scene Investigation was held on March 27 at Sparks Park, under the direction of Naturalist Alisha Flemming. |
