Winter Adaptations
Wow! How do they do it? Animals manage to survive arctic temperatures and do just fine. We've had some "real" winter weather this year but snow and cold are no reason to stay indoors! Fulda High School students donned their winter gear and snowshoes to find out what animals make their home at Talcot Lake County Park in the winter. By measuring air and snow temperatures, snow pack and microclimates, students learned that snow is actually important in the survival of many animals in winter and a challenge for others. To find out what animals stay active in winter, they practiced some bird call identification, worked on their sense of smell, honed up on tracking skills and then trekked about on snowshoes looking for critters. They came away with a better understanding of animal adaptations in the winter months and a good dose of fresh air!
