Birds and Water Quality
Tthe Ecology Bus visited the Mountain Lake area on September 21 and September 22. On the first day Mountain Lake Elementary Fifth Graders boarded the Bus for the Avian Adventure program at Mountain County Park. Our feathered friends are as varied as the environments in which they live. The group discovered what makes the bird such a unique animal and the adaptations that enable them to live in Minnesota. Participants learned common bird calls and what identifying characteristics will help to recognize them in the field. The group took a bird trek in search of our feathered neighbors, using binoculars and their newly aquired skills. On day two, Fourth Graders were taken to Mountain Lake where they studied our Water Quality program. They learned what it takes to determine the health of our rivers, lakes and wetlands. Students had the opportunity to use scientific equipment to test physical, chemical and biological aspects of water and how all three types of tests help us to understand the health of our most important natural resource – water!
