Earth Day at Sparks Park
The 41st Anniversary of Earth Day was celebrated at Sparks Park in Lakefield on Thursday, May 12. Approximately 60 eighth grade students from Southwest Star Concept School in Okabena and Jackson County Central Middle School in Lakefield participated in several events. Students split into groups, rotating to different learning stations: Ben Crowell, Jackson County Environmental Services Officer, presented an energy program; West Fork Des Moines River Watershed Coordinator Lauren Michelsen taught students about Watersheds; PEBC Naturalist Alisha Flemming presented a session on Scrambled Animals, detailing many local species. In the last station, students helped Naturalist Clay Steele with Sparks Park improvements by adding fresh wood chips to our hiking trails and pulling invasive plants.
