4-H Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Club
The Prairie Ecology Bus Center and Jackson County Extension have teamed up to bring a new 4-H Club opportunity for youth in grades 4-8. The Club will meet once a month from October thru March for super-sleuthing, exciting experiments, and hands-on activities. They will learn how experts solve mysteries with staff from the PEBC, Extension Office, Chief of Police and more! They will analyze blood, fingerprints and other types of evidence and investigate a crime scene. The first get-together was held at Sparks Park on Tuesday, October 25. Participants investigated Bloodstain Science by learning the type & velocity of a weapon, number of blows, handedness of assailant, which wounds were inflicted first, type of injuries, how long ago the crime was committed and whether death was immediate or delayed. The second CSI program, entlted Fingerprints, was held at the Middle School in Lakefield on Tuesday, November 22, with special guest Police Chief Andrew Konechne. Pop cans were finger printed using cocoa powder; they drew their thumb prints; and also learned what different powders are used for fingerprinting. The third CSI program, entlted Inference, took place at the Middle School on Tuesday, December 20. The definition of inference is a logical judgment based on circumstantial evidence. The students used inferences to figure out what happened or what something is. There were 10 presents that the kids had to figure out the object shape, how many were in the box, how big it was, and then to guess what they thought it was. They were able to shake, tilt, rotate, listen and smell the boxes. Their answers were discussed, and the boxes were opened to see if they were correct. Following, the group made Anthropometric measurements, in which they will figure out who was who, at the next meeting. |
