Earth Day at Sparks Park
The 40th Anniversary of Earth Day was celebrated at Sparks Park in Lakefield on Wednesday, April 21st. Forty-plus ninth grade students from Southwest Star Concept School in Okabena participated in several events marking this historic day. Students, split into three groups, rotated to three different stations: Ben Crowell, Jackson County Environmental Services Officer, presented an energy program; Project YES! Coordinator Mike Swenson gave a hands-on presentation on the topic of wind generators. Students were asked to build their own miniature wind turbines; In the last station, students helped Naturalists Clay Steele and Alisha Flemming to chip the hiking trails, prune unwanted species and pick up trash.
