Monarch Butterfly

The monarch butterfly is well known for its long distance travels. From the northern part of the United States to South America, these flying flowers cross through many peoples yards in their flight. Keeping track of when they make their trip is a job many scientists and volunteers have done for years.

Fun Monarch Facts:

  • Monarch caterpillars can be seen April through September
  • The egg is about the size of a pinhead.  In two weeks the caterpillar grows 2,700 times its birth size.  This is like an 8 pound human baby weighing 10 tons at 2 weeks old.
  • The eggs will hatch in 3-12 days, this is depended on the temperature
  • Monarchs follow the same migration route year after year.
  • Fall migration to the south goes from August to October
  • Travel over 2000 miles for migration
  • Males have a spot on the hind wings which is for pheromone release
