In-School Programs

From Great Blue Herons gracing our wetlands
to Wolves enlivening our forests to the gentle giants of the oceans, interactive
programs bring the natural world into your school!
In-School programs are interactive classes in which slides,
animal artifacts, live mounts, simulations, and other tools educate students
about the natural wonders of our region and the world. In-School programs may
be Assemblies or Naturalist-in-Residence programs. NIR programs begin with an
assembly follow by individual classroom workshops. They assembly programs are
60-70 minutes in length. Classroom workshops run 50 to 60 minutes.
For program fees, please contact the PEBC.
If you have recently had an In-School Program for your school
or organization, please complete an on-line evaluation so we can better meet
your needs! On-Line Evaluation

| Assembly Programs
Assembly programs are 60-70 minute large group presentations. A maximum
of 100 students is a recommended group size for the whale program. Other
programs can accommodate larger groups. Optimum group size is recommended
not to exceed 150 students.
** Please note: If we are asked to give an assembly
to a gathering of over 100 students and/or one with a large spread in age groups,
we encourage the school to schedule a second assembly and divide the students
into older and younger groups; otherwise, we will target the program to the
middle age group. |
| Residency Program Package
Have a PEBC Naturalist-In-Residence visit your school! Residency Programs
begin with a regular Assembly Program and are followed by 50- to 60-minute
naturalist presentations in individual classrooms (maximum 30 students
each). Students are able to explore pelts, bones, artifacts, and other
props as well as take part in hands-on activities to learn even more about
the assembly topic.

The 3-R Challenge
Grades 3-5
Each day, every Minnesota citizen creates 4.4 pounds of trash. That's
a lot of garbage! Learn how to reduce this amount by following the three
R's. Find out what's actually in trash and the ways your community recycles.
Take back new ideas to improve waste reduction in your own homes and schools. |
Wonders of Wolves
Grades K-8
From Little Red Riding Hood to the Wolf Reintroduction in Yellowstone,
wolves capture our imaginations. Wolves have awed and inspired us and
can instill fear, even hatred, in others. Learn about the amazing lives
of these creatures through slides and wolf props (wolf pelt, skull, tracks)
to teach your students about the wolves of Minnesota. |
A Whale in my School
Grades K-8
Whales are some of the largest creatures to have ever inhabited the earth.
Join the staff on an ocean odyssey learning about these remarkable animals
and their watery home. Dive into hands-on activities, whale sounds, and
a tour around and inside of a life-size, inflatable whale!
** Note: Requires a large room
or gymnasium at least 70 feet long. Limited to numbers of students which
can fit into whale. Call the PEBC to discuss program options to accommodate
larger groups. |
Way of the Wetlands
Grades K-5
Southwest Minnesota was once covered in wetlands, yet few people know
much about this endangered ecosystem. Using slides, sounds, animal props,
and a guest "beaver," wetlands will come alive in your classroom
as the staff teach about metamorphosis, water quality, and the strange
yet wonderful animals that live in these watery regions. |
Minnesota Wildlife
Grades K-5
Minnesota is rich in both wildlife and the cultural history tied to this
wildlife. A variety of habitats span Minnesota's landscape ranging from
prairies and agricultural lands to rivers, wetlands, lakes, and forests.
Each habitat contains an amazing diversity of critters, important for
a healthy ecosystem. Learn about our wildlife heritage through slides,
pelts, skulls, and other artifacts. |
Predators of the Air - Not
available, under revision
Grades 4-12
Hawks, Eagles, and Owls have long been a source of fascination for people
of all ages and cultures. Learn what types of birds of prey live in Minnesota
and where they can be found. Discover what makes them such superb hunters.
Students learn about the amazing lives of these creatures through a slide
program, live mounts, skulls, talons, pellets, and more! |
The Tallgrass Prairie - Not
available, under revision
Grades 6-12
The prairie once stretched from Minnesota to the Rocky Mountains. Buffalo,
wolves, prairie dogs, and red-tail hawks roamed the prairie in search of
food. The big bluestem grass grew seven feet tall and prairie fires burned
from horizon to horizon. Those prairies formed the deep, fertile soil that
Minnesota farmers depend upon today. Through slides and other teaching tools,
your class will learn about the amazing plants and animals that still live
on the remnant prairies of Minnesota. |
